Is my HDD causing lag in Premiere Pro, and which SSD should I buy?

Hi everyone, I currently have a MacBook Pro with an M4 Pro chip and 24 GB of RAM, and I mainly use it for video editing in Premiere Pro. Right now, I work off a 4 TB LaCie Rugged HDD, but I’ve noticed quite a bit of lag when editing. Even when I add relatively simple overlays or a color grade, playback starts stuttering, scrubbing becomes less responsive, and loading footage takes longer than I’d expect. I mainly work with 4K footage and edit short advertising videos, although I sometimes work on larger projects as well. What makes me think the HDD might be the problem is that when I move the same files onto my MacBook’s internal SSD, Premiere Pro runs much more smoothly, with little to no noticeable lag. So I’m wondering whether the problem is mainly my HDD or whether Premiere Pro itself could also be a factor. I’m considering buying an external SSD, but I’m not sure what specifications I actually need. Would an SSD with around 1,000 MB/s read and write speeds be enough for my workflow, or would it be worth investing in something faster, such as 2,000 MB/s or more? I’d also appreciate recommendations for specific SSD models that offer good value for money and are reliable for video editing. I’d prefer something around 2 TB, but I’m open to other suggestions if there’s a good reason to go for a different capacity. Thanks in advance!

  • “HDDs get their best performance for sequential read/write operations, and absolutely suck for random read/write. When you're scrubbing and jumping around a sequence, you're doing random read/write. Editing off an SSD is the ideal if you can manage it - but the prices are pretty wild at the moment. Unless you're working with extremely high bitrate footage, even a SATA SSD in an external USB-3 e”

  • “In 2026 you shouldn’t be editing off of an hdd if you can help it. If you have enough local ssd space on your MacBook, I would edit off that, it’s faster than any external ssd you could buy. Storage prices are insane these days, so I’d actually recommend being conservative and just getting what you need. If using the MacBook ssd isn’t realistic, then go for something that’s going to get you at lea”
