Today we have a fleet of 5G modems we manage and deploy for any combination of backup connectivity, popup sites, or mobile applications. We are now looking into what it would take to add a dozen or so Starlink kits into our fleet. What it isnt publicly clear is how easy it is to bring these up/down, would we need to maintain service on every shelved unit or can we activate as needed? Would love to chat with anyone who's doing this today to understand what management and lifecycle looks like.

  • “MSP Cons: It seems that most controls are only through the mobile app. I did see some sort of homebrew web app someone made but have not used it Few controls are available when not directly connected behind the starlink router (moot if you will have a firewall behind it anyways) You cannot get a static IP Cheap plans do not get a public IP (cgnat) if they sit unused for a while, they can”

  • “You can suspend service on them but its monthly. AFAIK you can't pause like you can with residential We're use the starlink v4 mini's with afternarket battery packs. The V5's suposoted to be USB-C and hopefully it comes with its own battery 5g is so much better, VZW has the ones with built in battery and they even allow static IP and full portal management. We can easily stick them in a office”

  • “There are service resellers that can set you up with far greater functionality than what you can get directly through Starlink. My application is likely different than yours but we have a pretty good relationship with KVH for this type of thing.”

  • “It turns on and off really easily with the roam plans. I have a few I lend/rent out as needed or use for camping. Although I haven't tried activating/deactivating them now that they want you to pay $10/mo for standby plans. They change their plans relatively often, so it's hard to predict what I'll pay next time I need it, but it's always worked out fine.”

  • “In my limited experience, you can turn them up or down if you own the kits. They even have backup plans to maintain service that then turns up/down immediately for emergency stuff.”
