Hi all. My house has its nbn box at the very corner which has the modem attached do it. I had used flip as an isp for close to 2 years, which although had decent speed, I didnt have a lot of issues with the connectivity in my other rooms in the far end of the house. However, i switched to belong recently and although it has atleast 2x speed close to the router, the connection has become much worse in the farther rooms (not even sure how that is possible). As such, I am considering options on how to somehow move my setup towards the middle of the house without moving the whole causing wire clutter (I live in a rental). A suggestion that i recently got was to get starlink, as the price seems reasonable right now, with $75 for 100 mbps and not much hardware and installation charges. I have tried using a signal booster but it has not worked at all (I got a plug in one from d-link, which increased the connection range but the internet remained crap). Is there a way to resolve my issue or is it time for me to move to starlink? Another reason why I was considering to switch is because the deal in starlink seems to be consistent in pricing, whereas all other isps charge low for the first 6 months and then shoot up the prices, something which I hate a lot.

  • “Stay on FTTP. Starlink is worse in every way. Run some Ethernet cabling within your house. A mesh wifi system as others have suggested could also help, but won't be as performant as hard wiring your devices (clients and WiFi AP(s)).”

  • “It sounds like the issue is signal around the house, not an issue with signal getting into the house. Go a mesh network to fix that. Starlink would be more expensive per month.”

  • “Your router is the issue, 100%. I'm an ISP tech support team lead. Average life span of an entry level router is about 3-5 years in optimal conditions. Anything beyond that and you will start to see degradation in quality of signal , less speed and more dropouts. You also need to consider if wi-fi channel congestion is an issue. If you pull up your phone and you can see heaps of different networ”

  • “This is a home networking problem, literally nothing to do with NBN, you would be crazy to go from FTTP to Starlink. Just run a cable along the skirting boards, to move the access point / router to a better location. $20 in a network cable.”

    u/iViLe_7 points · Sep 26, 2026View

  • “Router model? They can degrade with heat issues. Factory reset your router? Reboot NBN box? NBN type? If you have FTTP it will be superior in everything against Starlink. I've never had extenders work very well. Mesh networking is how it's best done now. Some ISPs will have annual sale prices.”
