I am preparing to get off 8.0.3k and move to VVF 9.1 I understand we need to deploy ops for licensing now. I am planning on doing the installation without any management features as I don't need anything other than vCenter and ESXi + vKS What I am unclear on is the patching or upgrading. Can I still patch vCenter from the VAMI or RDU like I have been doing forever? Can I still patch ESXi hosts from cluster management updates vLCM? Can I still patch Live Recovery from its own management interface? Can I still patch AVI from the AVI controllers? Or do I need to use ops to do all this moving forward? I am a bit confused as the VVF stuff is buried in VCF and I know that thing is an entire new beast of a product that changes how updates are performed. I have tried to open SRs but they go to TD Synnex and honestly, they are really horrible unless you get lucky. 2 tickets gave me completely different answers, so I've come to talk to the OGs here.

  • “Ops only takes over patching in VCF, in VVF you would still use the existing workflows you’ve touched on in your post. It is important to note that if you use Ops for Logs you’ll need to also deploy the VMware Management Services Platform. However if you’re not using logs then Ops and License Server are the only additional components you’ll need for 9.1.x+.”

  • “I can only answer for vc, esx and live recovery - yes, all the same way as usual. We also aren't using fleet yet - just basic vcf ops, license server, vc and hosts and have upgraded from 9.1 > 9.1.1.0 (also from 8.03k > 9.1.1.0)”

  • “I’d separate the one-time move to 9.1 from routine patching afterward. For the upgrade, Operations and the License Server need to be in place before vCenter, with ESXi following vCenter; that does not mean Operations becomes the patching mechanism for every VVF component. The existing workflows appear to remain for vCenter, ESXi, and Live Recovery, but I’d verify Avi separately.”
