Petrol pump owner earns ₹3 or ₹4 per litre petrol and ₹2 or ₹3 per litre diesel Let's consider ₹3 for calculation Suppose you get ₹3000 fuel with UPI which will attract flat ₹5 MDR For calculation consider fuel price per litre ₹100 So you get 30 litres of fuel, Petrol pump owner earns 30 X 3 = 90 rs But I MDR is ₹5 so, On ₹90 income they have to pay ₹5 Tax. That's 5.5% FLAT TAX for petrol pump owners There are also other wholesale buisness where margins are razor thin.This small amount will add up on yearly statement. Petrol pump owner can't raise fuel price like other wholesaler to pass on the cost. MDR is not on buisness profit but is on BUISNESS REVENUE. Government is saying the tax is just small percentage but it's not. EDIT Some queries answered from discussion //What about Card payments// Ans - Card companies wave of charges on fuel for consumer.Look at your bank statement //But it costs money for UPI infrastructure// Ans - It also costs money to print and move currency notes.Yet, Government doesn't charge MDR on currency notes.
