Post

Every few weeks someone asks in a post why storage got so expensive, and the answers are usually based on the gut feeling. So instead of guessing, I pulled the actual monthly price history and worked out the real numbers. What you're looking at is the median price per terabyte for current 8TB+ NAS drives (US, new drives that are in stock). It's split into the two tiers most people pick between: consumer drives (WD Red / IronWolf) and enterprise (Exos / MG / Ultrastar). For over a year, basically 2024 into 2025, it pretty much didn't move off of $20/TB. Then from late 2025 it increased to the $40+/TB and has stayed there. So new drives now cost about double what they did, with no sign of going down. The usual explanation holds up: AI datacenters are eating most of the supply, and there are only three HDD makers left to fill the demand. Interactive version, with each drive's own price history:https://www.nasdisks.com/articles/nas-drive-price-crunch/ The raw data behind it, the computed monthly medians, free to use with a credit:https://github.com/deeddy/nas-drive-data/tree/main/price-trends You are probably wondering why 8TB+ only? Smaller drives carry a much higher price per TB, because drives have fixed costs no matter the capacity. So mixing low capacity drives in just adds noise. 8TB or bigger is also what most people actually use for a build. Findings: Consumer and...

  • [comment u/SirNoobsterTM] I am in need of 2nd 16TB drive. Checked the retailer where i bought the last one (before 9/25). 2x the price. This is insane. I can forget about expanding and god forbid some drive fails.

  • [comment u/DerHerrGammler] Haha pices doubled would be nice. The price of my 16TB hard drives trippled. I bough 3 a few years ago and would need to pay the same amount for one additional as for all 3 that I already own.

  • “the flat $20/tb line held for so long because it was basically the floor, not a real market price. once the hyperscalers started buying out allocations the whole curve shifted and it hasnt come back down because the fabs arent adding capacity, theyre just retooling for higher density. for anyone still buying, watch the recert enterprise listings on serverpartdeals and goharddrive. i picked up 14”

  • “Useful chart. Recerts are the only way I've bought since the jump (ServerPartDeals / GoHardDrive style Exos). RAID helps with one dead drive, not with "drive was already dying when I bought it." Budget a hot spare and burn-in for a week before it holds anything you care about.”

  • “The AI datacenter explanation only works if that demand is competing for the same retail supply, and no idea how much of this is retail markup versus allocation. Have you separated those two effects in the raw data?”
