I have 2 WD EX2 Ultra units and I just learned that their EOL is going to be sometime in December of 2026. A bit surprising but not at the same time. Obviously I need to replace them and I run a 723+ at my small business. I was thinking of getting a DS425+ and set it up in Raid 2 x 2 on the drives, so basically replacing my 2 older WD units but in one case. I would be using 6TB drives in each 4 slots. As for the usage this is just for home - we have a lot of family photos / video's / some file sharing. The current units are backed up to the cloud continuously, and I would do the same with the new system. There is really a reason to jump to the 925+ over the 425+ for our usage? No, we do not really access this from outside our home, all internal.

  • “Take one drive from each of the old (assuredly mirrored) arrays, plug into DS425+, format and SHR them. You now have about 5.5TB of free space. Move over all your data from one. When one finishes, move the disk from it into your SHR array; you now have up to 5.5TB of data on the SHR array, plus now at least 5.5TB of free space again. Now move over all the data from the other old unit. Once done, m”

  • “Almost anything is a step up from MyCloud EX2. Honestly, it works for very minimal usage, but it’s very confining. I’d say the 435+ is a few steps up, and more than capable for your usage. It’ll keep you future-proofed a bit”

  • “I have a DS425+ it’s rock solid as usual… memory isn’t that great but unless you’re doing some niche case that needs more memory it’s solid. I use mine to do weekly backups and to store photos documents etc”

  • “i wouldnt run raid in 2x2 wasting disk space, just use shr1 on all 4 disks and have a backup. i assume the WD EX2 are mirrored, so take a disk out of each and pop into the syno nas start building and migration. then bring over the final 2 disks. or get new disks to use in the syno nas and use the WD EX2 as backup.”
