I have a 20‑day reservation for October. Then I received a change‑of‑reservation request from the same guest asking to extend her stay by 3 more days. I didn’t mind the extension at all - until I looked at the reservation details and saw that Airbnb showed $0 payout for those additional days. I called Airbnb, waited on hold, and eventually got an explanation that was… not very clear. But what I did understand is that guests now have the option to request an extension either at the calendar price or at the same price as their original stay - including $0. According to the rep, some hosts just click “approve” without noticing, so the system allows guests to submit these free extension requests. The rep advised me to cancel the request and message the guest telling her she needs to choose the “paid” option if she wants me to approve it. I did exactly that. The guest thanked me, but she never submitted a new (paid) extension request. My question is: Has anyone else encountered this? Is this really a new Airbnb feature, or is it some kind of glitch?

  • “Lol someone's going to book a host for one night and then request an extension for 30 nights at the same price of the original stay just to see if the host notices”

  • “I wonder whether this will work at the grocery store? I could buy one can of tuna for $2.10 and then ask the store if I can add three more cans for free.”

  • “Adding this for awareness: This does not seem to be what is happening in your case, but there are 2 circumstances where extensions can do some unexpected things. If the extension triggers a length based discount. For example, you give 20% off for stays of 10 days or more. If they originally booked 9 nights and extend by 1 night, the new 10 day trip is actually cheaper than the original 9 day tri”

  • “Happened to me on extension stay -it appears there was a glitch in extension calculation. I noticed the price was too low for the extension stay. I text a detailed message Airbnb support and also spoke to them -it was a difficult process to get Airbnb's attention and they were slow to resolve the matter, probably Airbnb support does not know what to do. I also notified guest that the stay was too”

  • “Literally an epic fail of Airbnb if that's not a bug but a feature?! Why did you accepted it if you noticed 0$ difference?”
