I use Email Forwarding for my custom domain hosted by Squarespace to a Gmail account. Recently, I've noticed I am not receiving emails in email chains I am CC'd on. Some times it will be in the middle of chain or some times it will be the first email in the chain. I only know the email was not delivered when I see a reply to an email that is quoted in the chain, but that I never received. The people sending the emails receive no bounce back or failure to deliver notices, so they are also unaware that I've never received the email. I've spoken with Squarespace customer service, they say that Mailgun has logged the missing emails as delivered to the Gmail account. As a workaround, I changed the Email Forwarding address to an old Hotmail account I have, but the dropped emails in email chains continued after changing to the Hotmail account as well. Has anyone ever encountered this before? EDIT: All the senders appear to be from Gmail accounts.

  • “I had something weirdly similar happen with forwarding but it was through a different host. Turned out the issue was on the receiving end, not the forwarding service. Gmail was auto-sorting some of those chain emails into a hidden folder or just flat out rejecting them silently as spam. The forwarded emails sometimes get flagged differently than direct ones since the headers look a bit mangled W”

  • “this sounds like it could be a duplicate message-id problem. when emails bounce around in chains the forwarding layer sometimes passes a message-id the receiving server already saw, so it silently drops it as a duplicate”

  • “since the same problem continued after switching to hotmail, i wouldn't assume a gmail filter is the whole cause. ask squarespace to trace one missing message from after the hotmail switch and confirm the exact destination address and delivery time, then look for that message across all folders in that account.”
