I have a small business with employees in multiple states. Fully remote. I am considering adding QB Payroll to my existing QB Plus subscription. I did some googling to find out how QB Payroll compares to Gusto (my other option), and I just kept seeing Reddit posts/comments saying how bad it was. People didn’t seem to go into detail, but the same complaints came up: terrible support and tax errors. How realistic is this? Calculating payroll isn’t exactly rocket science… please tell me some real world scenarios you’ve run into. I would love to add QB Payroll to my existing QB account so I don’t have to use another platform.

  • “In my state (WA), QBO payroll does not remit or file worker comp taxes, but every other payroll service does. BUT also I'm an independent bookkeeper with 20 clients on payroll and I no longer work with clients who use QBO payroll. Yes, QBO payroll is fine most of the time, but once you have an issue, and you will eventually have an issue, you enter their customer service hell. I can't tell you the”

I was watching the tax agency portal, so I knew something was wrong before they did anything. QB sent a message saying they were missing info to access the client tax portal, returned the funds and DELETED everythi”

  • “The complaints are realistic, especially once you add multiple states. Payroll math isn’t the hard part; state registrations, unemployment rates, local taxes, and notices are where things go sideways, and support quality matters when a filing gets rejected. I’d only use it if you’re comfortable double-checking every new state setup and reading every tax notice yourself.”

  • “I have processed payroll for 5 years in QBD no real issue. I work for a general contractor in Ohio and we need to remit taxes to multiple local municipalities. In QBD I could set up however many I needed. QBO now only allows me to withhold one per Employee. We also use a secondary construction platform for scheduling, budget, etc and the employees log their time there. Now when the time pushes o”
